231: Out of the darkness

Three months of base training is in the books. Roughly 75 hours of aerobic training, core strengthening, and weight training. And in between, stretching, icing, and massage. Hard to believe I have a life outside of this little routine, but I've managed to sneak in several of my license exams, a bit of wedding planning, and just a few trips out for a cold beer or two.

This week was over 65 degrees on most days, as well as marking the switch over to daylight savings. Any outdoor athlete in the Northern Hemisphere will tell you this is the best weekend of each season. No more slogging through hour-long runs in the darkness, and no more 3 hour bike rides on the trainer, parked in front of the TV.

With the new-found warmth and daylight, the toughest thing is to keep from overdoing it. It's very easy to feel great in the middle of a long run, and say "I'll just sneak in a couple more miles", especially as all of this base training has built a strong level of fitness. But this is also the quick path to injury and burnout. The mind games I play are endless, as I am constantly reminding myself to slow down and stay within the planned heart rate or time splits. It's comparable to those adjustable pet leashes, where the dog runs too quickly to the end and then "clickkkkk!" as it hits the end of the rope, skids to a stop, and waits for the owner.

Except in this case...I'm the owner.
